MAAFUSHI

WOWZA!! The Maldives is absolutely next level! Touching down at the Male airport you are surrounded by pristine blue waters. To leave the airport you need to jump on a water taxi to the mainland. A two-hour ferry ride later you'll land on the local island of Maafushi. This is where we spent our week in the Maldives and celebrated Christmas 2019! Our hotel upgraded us and decked out the room after we told them it was our honeymoon!

The Maldives is an Islamic country and there are local dress standards for public places.  The islands have 'bikini beaches' and you must be covered up when walking outside of the designated areas. Also no alcohol on the local islands! So one night we took the water taxi out to the year-round party boat, cheers! (These rules don't apply if you can afford to stay at one of the luxurious private resort islands.)

We took a day to visit the nearby local island of Gulhi. This bikini beach is oh damn!! The water was an incredible shade of turquoise blue :) A perfect beach day.

It just so happens the flag colors are red and green so it sort of felt like Christmas! Instead of opening presents under a tree, we hopped in a boat and spent the day scuba diving <3 A local had told us that the true way to experience the Maldives is to go under the water, so true!! Dolphin, sea turtles, eels, shipwreck and fishes galore.. these waters are filled with life!

We were blown away with Maafushi and its affordability. In about 20 minutes you could stroll the full length of the island. The hanging chairs were the perfect chill spot. There were no cars. The streets were made of crushed coral and pressed white sand. And at the end of every road was a view of the breathtaking water.

Can't wait to see what the other 1200 islands of the Maldives have to offer ;)
